Start Here: What This Blog Is, and Why Personal Branding Can’t Wait
A quick introduction to who I am, how Vision Board Media got started, and what I’ll be sharing here to help you communicate your value, strengthen your personal brand, and build real authority.
Confession: I have been writing my whole life.
Journals as a kid. One of the internet’s earlier blogs as an adult. And eventually, a whole career built around helping other people find the right words for who they are, what they bring to the table, and where they want to go next.
So it is a little funny that it took me this long to start writing here, on Vision Board Media.
Consider this the official first post.
If you are new to me or to Vision Board Media, this is where I tell you who is behind all of this, what you can expect from this blog, and why I believe the way you communicate who you are matters more than ever.
A quick word on who is writing this
I am Donna Serdula, founder of Vision Board Media and the person behind LinkedIn-Makeover.com.
Since 2009, I have helped executives, entrepreneurs, professionals, and organizations figure out how to present themselves so the right people understand their value, remember them, and take them seriously.
That work started almost by accident.
Back when most people treated LinkedIn like an online résumé they updated once and then forgot about, I realized something: a LinkedIn profile was not simply a form to fill out.
It was a story to tell.
And a lot of genuinely impressive people had no idea how to tell theirs.
So I started rewriting LinkedIn profiles as strategic marketing documents. Instead of simply documenting where someone had been, we focused on what made that person valuable, what they wanted to be known for, and where they were going next.
That idea eventually became a book, LinkedIn Profile Optimization For Dummies, and a company.
But the core belief behind the work has never really changed:
You are more impressive than your profile makes you sound. That gap is fixable.
How Vision Board Media got here
Vision Board Media grew directly out of that first realization.
What began as LinkedIn profile writing became something much bigger: career branding, positioning, messaging, visibility, thought leadership, and the strategy underneath all of it.
As the people we worked with advanced in their careers, their needs changed too. A LinkedIn profile might be part of the answer, but it was rarely the whole answer.
They needed to understand the thread connecting their experience, strengths, reputation, values, perspective, and ambitions. They needed their résumé, LinkedIn profile, bio, website, speaking materials, and public presence to tell the same story.
And for senior leaders, that work often becomes executive branding: getting clear about how you want to be known, how you create value, and what your professional presence needs to communicate as you move into the next chapter.
That is why we developed frameworks such as the Personal Brand Figure, the Executive Brand Blueprint, and the Career Brand Archetypes. They help us get beneath the documents and into the more important questions first.
When someone hears your name, meets you, reads your profile, or lands on your website, what do they now believe about you?
Because that belief is your brand.
Not your logo. Not your headshot. Not a clever tagline.
It is the impression you leave, and whether or not it is the impression you actually meant to leave.
What you’ll find on this blog
This blog is where I stop keeping the strategy tucked behind a proposal.
Every post is meant to stand on its own and give you something useful to think about, change, question, or put into practice.
Expect writing about:
- Personal and executive branding, minus the fluff.
- LinkedIn, including profiles, content, visibility, and how to use the platform more intentionally.
- Career branding, and how your résumé, LinkedIn profile, bio, website, and other career assets should work together instead of telling five different versions of your story.
- Positioning, and how to explain what you do in a way people can actually understand and remember.
- Thought leadership, and how to build authority without turning yourself into a content machine or pretending to be someone you are not.
- Career reinvention, pivots, growth, and figuring out what comes next when what worked before no longer quite fits.
- Career Brand Archetypes, including the patterns behind how different people naturally lead, influence, communicate, and contribute. You can explore yours with our Career Archetype Assessment.
- AI and your professional reputation, including what happens when search engines and AI systems encounter your name, your work, and the information that exists about you online.
Some posts will be big-picture strategy. Some will be tactical, do-this-today advice. Others will come from conversations with people doing interesting things through my Dream Big with Big Dreamers podcast.
All of them are built around the same goal: helping you communicate your value and build authority that is genuinely yours.
Why personal branding matters now
Here is the uncomfortable part.
Whether or not you have ever deliberately thought about your personal brand, other people are already forming an opinion about you.
A recruiter may see your LinkedIn profile before speaking with you. A potential client may search your name before replying to your email. A conference organizer may read your bio before deciding whether you belong on the stage. A board, investor, employer, or prospective partner may encounter your digital presence before you ever know they were looking.
And increasingly, search engines and AI systems are part of that discovery process too. They encounter the information available about you across profiles, websites, articles, bios, interviews, and other public sources and use it to help people understand who you are.
If those pieces do not tell a clear story, people are left to connect the dots themselves.
That is the part I want you to stop leaving to chance.
Personal branding is not about manufacturing an image. It is about making the value that already exists easier for other people to recognize.
It is about making sure the way you show up today reflects the person you have become and the direction you are moving toward, rather than an outdated headline and a summary you wrote in a hurry years ago.
That is what this blog is for.
To help you take ownership of the story, so when the right opportunity goes looking for someone like you, it can find you, understand you, and believe what it sees.
